Just Mercy

I found out about this book because I vaguely remembered a movie with the title Just Mercy, and one day I checked to see if it was a book; apparently it was one.

My Rating: 8/5

My Review:

I really enjoyed reading this book because it really showed me that not all people who are on death sentence in America really deserve it. Some actually might be innocent. It also opened my eyes on how race was in the South during the 1980s. And for one of the people whom Bryan Stevenson fought for was Walter McMillian.

Summary:

This book is about Bryan Stevenson and the people he fought for to get off the death sentence. Also about how the EJI, Equal Justice Initiative, was created. Some people who had cases were Walter McMillian, Joe Sullivan, Herbert Richardson, Charlie, and more.

Walter McMillian's Case:

  • He is from Monroe, Alabama

  • Arrested for murder of Rhoda Morrison

  • Had an affair w/ Karen Kelly

  • Witnesses lied

  • The 1993 conviction was overturned

  • Spent years on death row

  • Died in hospice

  • Had trauma induced dementia

Also in the story, the author (Who is Bryan Stevenson) describes what a death row prisoner's death sentence was and described it too. I really couldn't believe that this happens actually. Electric chair, they cover up the person's face, strap them in a chair, and electrocute them. And apparently, when other countries found out about the U.S using lethal injection, they stopped producing the drugs for them, which resulted with illegal drugs being used, which lead to drug busts. They also had inexperienced people put the lethal injection, because doctors cannot do it because it goes against their rules of killing someone, which lead to the injection not being put properly.

This story really gave me a HUGE perspective on the death row, the punishments, and the fact that 13 year olds and 14 year olds were being put on death row is absolutely terrifying because those people who have been your age when they were sentenced. And they could now be like in their 80's or 70's.

Book Recommendation:

I'd recommend this book to people who like reading books that turned into movies, books to do with justice, and people who can handle reading about this kind of stuff because the book comes down not to whether or not you like a certain topic but if you can handle reading it.

Now grab a book and read today! Even if you are Gaston...
